New Rail Vehicle Inspection Capabilities From The Electronic Vehicle System: Synthetic Images Of Carriage Side Surfaces

The Typhoon-TSD software for the EVS company's TSZhD-Expanded system has received a new option: the formation of a synthesized image of the side surfaces of cars in strict connection with the synthesized image of the bottom.

Previously, the railway television inspection system (RTIS) allowed viewing video from any camera, with each still frame time-stamped to a synthesized image of the car's undercarriage. This made it possible to see what was captured by the camera lens at a specific moment in time, but it didn't provide a complete picture of the car's side surface—the camera only captured a portion of the car, limited by its viewing angle. The operator saw fragments, not the entire car.

 

A new option solves this problem. The image is stitched together from multiple frames captured by the side cameras as the train moves, creating a single scan that covers the entire length of the car. The operator receives a complete, synthesized image of the side surface, similar to how a synthesized image of the bottom allows the entire car to be seen from below in a single frame.

 

Flexible configuration: the Typhoon-TSD software service model


The camera functionality in the Typhoon-TSD software is built on a service-based model. The user adds a camera to the system and assigns it a list of services based on the tasks at hand: for example, the "Recording" service or the "Broadcast" service. Creating a synthesized image of a train is one of the services that can be added to any camera.

 

Thus, the user can activate any number of cameras assigned to the "Synthetic Image Creation" service and direct them to any part of the train.

What does the new option provide?


  • A holistic picture. The operator sees the entire car in a single image, rather than individual fragments limited by the camera's viewing angle. The service can be configured to simultaneously display a synthesized image of the right, left, and bottom surfaces of the cars.
  • A unified coordinate system. The synthesized image of the side surfaces is linked to the synthesized image of the underbody—having detected suspicious areas underneath, the operator instantly switches to the same area on the side projection.
  • Ease of analysis. A static image allows you to study the side surface of a car without having to rewind the video or search for the desired frame.
  • Documentary value. The synthesized photographic image is suitable for reporting and archiving—it's a complete scan, not a video of individual fragments.

 

Key features of the TSZhD-Extended system :

 

  • Detection of approaching vehicles
  • Remote monitoring of the general appearance and underbody of the vehicle
  • Inspection of the bottom from different angles
  • Formation of a synthesized image of the bottom
  • Formation of a synthesized image of the side surfaces (new option)
  • Detection of suspicious/dangerous objects
  • Displaying data on the workstation in real time
  • High definition video recording
  • Dividing the train into cars and counting them (from both sides of the train)
  • Recognition of carriage numbers (on both sides of the train)
  • Recording in the database with reference to wagon numbers, data search by date and time


Since the beginning of 2026, EVS has been equipping TSZhD systems with new VEN-261-IP-N (Series 61) outdoor IP cameras. The option for synthetic side-view imaging is available for order as part of current deliveries and can be installed on previously released systems with the Typhoon-TSD software upgrade.
